Rep. Welch attracts two Democratic challengers

Vermont's sole congressman is facing two challengers in the Democratic primary on the path to re-election this fall.

Both challengers have criticized Rep. Peter Welch on campaign finance issues and say he should be taking bolder stances in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Here is an overview of the candidates.

Rep. Peter Welch
, D-Vt., of Norwich, said he is looking forward to campaign season because President Donald Trump has sparked political engagement among Vermonters.

"The fundamental issue is getting government to start focusing on income inequality and raising wages for everyday Americans," said Welch, who supports at $15 minimum wage. His other issues include rebuilding the nation's infrastructure, expanding broadband, and reducing prescription drug costs.

Dan Freilich
, of Brownsville, expects to run against Welch in the Democratic primary on a campaign platform centered on rejecting money from corporations, unions or other special interests.

"I got really interested in the concept of unconflicted service," Freilich said. "To me, it comes down to honor."

Benjamin Mitchell
, of Westminster, is running in the Democratic primary for the first time this year after watching how Sanders was able to gain traction as a democratic socialist. Mitchell ran various previous campaigns as a Liberty Union candidate.

"In the past I have seen myself more as putting a stake in the ground — the left," Mitchell said. This time, he has a campaign team and believes he has a better chance of winning. "I'm giving it everything I have."
