Several people have been injured, one seriously, after horses escaped on Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall this afternoon, according to initial reports. ... Arlington County police were initially dispatched to check along Route 50 near Courthouse for possible sightings of the escaped horses. Shortly thereafter, police were called off but firefighters and medics were dispatched to the base for the report of people injured.
The seriously injured person is being transported to a local hospital by an Arlington ambulance, according to scanner traffic. At least 1-2 additional injured people are being assessed and treated. ... There was also a report of a vehicle crash on the base associated with the escaped horses.
The U.S. Army has a horse stable on the base, for the horse-drawn caissons used during military funerals at Arlington National Cemetery. The program was suspended in 2023 after two horses died amid reports of unsafe conditions for the animals, though there were
calls to restart the program.
