Woman and boy killed after being struck by train in Roanoke

A woman and a boy were killed Sunday when they were struck by a train in Roanoke. ... Roanoke police were called to the 700 block of Drew Avenue Northeast at about 4:58 p.m. in response to a report of the incident.

They found the woman and boy, who were not identified, dead of injuries sustained when they were struck by the passing train. ... Another boy who suffered minor injuries was treated at the scene and released.

“Preliminarily, it appears a group of people were on and near the tracks as a train approached, and the decedents were unable to move in time to avoid being struck,” the Roanoke Police Department said in a news release Sunday.
