Seattle construction industry sheds thousands of jobs as development slows

A slowdown in new development projects has shrunk the local construction industry.

The Seattle metro area lost 5,100 construction jobs between February 2024 and February 2025, according to the latest available employment data from the Washington State Economic Security Department.

The 7% pullback in construction is the most severe among all private sector industries in the metro. Seattle’s overall job market grew by 1.4% over the same period.

Demand for office space has been muted as some of the largest employers in the region revise their office attendance plans.
