Hurst slightly leading in Lynnwood mayoral race

EVERETT — Longtime City Council member George Hurst took a slight lead in the Lynnwood mayoral race, initial results showed Tuesday.

Hurst faces incumbent Christine Frizzell, who is seeking her second term as mayor.

The two differed on how best to address the city’s budget deficit, which largely stems from lower-than-expected revenues from sales taxes, construction permits and red-light cameras.

Hurst was slightly ahead Tuesday night with 51.5% of the vote. Hurst has served on the council since 2015. He also ran for mayor in 2017 and 2021. He worked in the commercial lighting industry for more than 30 years. He said the city’s budget crisis prompted him to run for mayor this year. His campaign largely focused on the budget, and he also prioritized public safety, housing affordability and retaining city leadership.
