Seattle coalition sticks with neighborhood food district plan on prime site

Development has slowed all over, including in Southeast Seattle, where a grassroots community development group has been working for years to build an economic development project across the street from the Rainier Beach light rail station.

The first phase of the Food Innovation District opened a year ago, marking a milestone in the Black-led Rainier Beach Action Coalition's (RBAC) ownership of just over half an acre in its neighborhood. The area has the city's highest concentration of immigrants, refugees and African Americans.

Phase I is in an old industrial building that houses RBAC's 8-year-old Farm Stand program and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) subscription program. There, produce from BIPOC farmers in the region is processed and distributed.

In addition to the industrial building, two old structures are also on the property.
