Downtown Seattle's Westlake Park to reopen after multimillion-dollar renovation

A newly renovated Westlake Park in downtown Seattle has ditched its signature fountain and sculptures for more plants and trees — and public Wi-Fi.

The park will reopen to the public at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

Over the past eight months, construction crews have removed a long-defunct fountain wall along Fourth Avenue, a Romanesque arch and a set of seven public art sculptures at the southern end, installed during the park’s last renovation in 1988.

The stage — an area formerly occupied by the arch — is now accessible to people with disabilities, with new sound and electrical improvements for events. The park will also have Wi-Fi thanks to major electrical upgrades across the system.
