Data center planned inside Starbucks headquarters building in Sodo

A developer is eyeing a new "small-scale" data center inside Starbucks’ sprawling headquarters in Seattle’s Sodo neighborhood — and the company says it would not be affected by the city’s recent one-year data center moratorium.

Colossus Data Center Advisors is behind the plans for a new 45,600-square-foot facility at 2401 Utah Ave. S., according to permit filings submitted last week. The data center would take over a former Amazon Fresh retail store and distribution center, according to site plans and a listing by Kidder Mathews.

According to Colossus’ plans, the facility would have a total capacity “at or below” 20 megavolt-amperes (or roughly 20 megawatts), the threshold for data centers banned under the yearlong moratorium passed by the City Council last week.

The temporary ban, which could be extended for another six months, still allows for new facilities under the 20 megavolt-amperes threshold. Developers have filed plans for new data centers in Sodo and downtown Seattle in recent months, though it’s unclear whether those projects would be affected by the moratorium.
