New West Virginia law requires municipal elections to coincide with state elections

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS) — More than 100 West Virginia cities and towns have off-year elections set for next Tuesday, but the clock is running to move those municipal elections to coincide with statewide elections.

A new law passed during this year's legislative session states municipal elections must be held on the same day as statewide primary and general elections but gives until July 2032 - after the next census -before towns are forced to make the switch.

Pratt has already decided to make the move, buying into backer's claims the change will save money and increase voter turnout.

“I think it will make a big change,” Pratt Mayor Andy Williams told Eyewitness News. “Everybody comes out for the general election. For city elections, we may get 50 to 60 people.”
