All five residents of a West Virginia town voted to ban LGBT discrimination

Following a unanimous vote by all five of its residents, Thurmond, W.Va., is now the smallest town in the nation with a ban on employment, housing and public accommodation discrimination against LGBT individuals.

“I never thought it would matter because Thurmond, West Virginia, is so so small,” Tighe Bullock, one of the town’s council members, told The Post in an interview. But the symbolism of the unanimous vote in favor of the ordinance was important to the residents, every single one of whom is civically active. (There are three council members, along with a mayor and a town recorder.)

“There’s only five of us, including me, and we’re all pretty close,” Bullock said.

The anti-discrimination ordinance is identical to the one currently in place in Charleston, the state capital. Both are more sweeping than the statewide Human Rights Act, which does not currently ban housing and employment discrimination on the basis of gender or sexual orientation.
