Wisconsin lawmakers to again pursue early processing of absentee ballots
MADISON A group of Wisconsin lawmakers will again pursue a change in state law that would allow poll workers to process absentee ballots the day before an election to shorten the time Wisconsin waits for election results, a measure that has been blocked by influential Republican lawmakers so far.
Republican state Rep. Scott Krug of Rome, the former chairman of the Assembly's elections committee, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel a package of bills aimed at codifying new election practices will be released next week, including the measure that would give poll workers more time to process mail-in ballots.
The effort comes after Republican Senate leaders refused to take up the last bill that would accomplish the same goal, and as President Donald Trump has vowed to end the practice of mail-in voting altogether, even though such changes must be made more locally.
"We wanted to find a way to get it done through the Senate, so (we're) looking at doing more absentee ballot reforms all together," Krug told the Journal Sentinel in an interview.
