Thousands are now Canadians under new citizenship law. Half of them are Americans

The government says 1,955 applications approved between Dec. 15 and March 31 as a result of Bill C-3 were from people who were born in the United States. People born in Mexico came second with 900 successful applicants while people born in the United Kingdom were in third place with 140 people.

"The vast majority of our clients are American," she said. "In some cases because they would like to have a backup in case, from their perspective, the situation becomes worse for them … in other cases because they perceive it as urgent."

Middlemiss said some clients are seeking proof of citizenship because they have a child who is gay or trans. Others are concerned that U.S. President Donald Trump's government could reimpose the draft and their child could be forced to join the U.S. Army.

...until relatively recently, most of the maternal side relatives in my father's family were born in Canada. Some moved to the US, many did not.

This was never discussed when I was a child. Not sure why. I came across this info while building my family tree on Ancestry.com. My paternal grandmother was the oldest of 3. In most census documents, both her parents and both her siblings are listed as being born in Canada, specifically Ontario, while she is stated to have been born in Michigan. Her father was a farmer, and someone else in the tree said that the family probably moved around at harvest time, going where there was work, and that my great-grandmother must have given birth while the family was temporarily in the States. So, my grandmother likely had dual citizenship. She was born in 1894.

Her brother had at least 10 children, so I must have a boatload of cousins of one degree or another scattered throughout Ontario. I hope I can find some of them.

At any rate. I am excited by the prospect of being a "lost" Canadian, and definitely plan to pursue this.

… and I’d really, really, reallllly want to take them up on it, but my son (we’re in FL and roommates, thanks to the economy) insists he couldn’t do winters and my daughter (in NC now) is similarly inclined. I grew up in Eastern IA and figure I could reacclimate if it came down to it. I worked remotely for a hospital in Toronto and loooooooved it in comparison to the US hospitals I transcribed for. The people are just so obviously… normal. sweet. caring.

I’ve always bemoaned the fact I licked my wounds from a shitty marriage for so long (finally divorced in 2003), when I should have been trolling the interwebz for a lovely Scotsman (family came from Orkney) whilst I was young enough to pull it off. A Canuck would work just as well. Alas, I’m probably too old to be able to work any magic. *sigh*
