Darning socks

I have "the egg". Do I need a special darning needle and/or darning "yarn" or thread?

I've always used whatever is on hand....which is why my repaired green wool socks have regular navy blue thread.

Good luck!

and darning thread which I inherited from great-aunts. It's very soft six-ply cotton and does a great job--the darn turns out flat and closely woven, lasts forever. If I didn't have proper darning thread I'd use embroidery thread.

Happy darning--one of the most satisfactory household arts I know of.

PS I should clarify that I'm talking about darning socks, not woven fabrics.

I've sewed for ages, but I've never darned a sock. I always think you'd feel the stitches under your foot, and that it would be irritating. Not so?
