SSL on a WordPress website

I apologize in advance if this isn't the right group for this question. The Website, DB, & Software Developers group doesn't seem to get much traffic these days, so I thought I'd try here.

I inherited the duty of maintaining a website for my church and the hosting site is telling me I need to set something called Secure Certificate Xpress to update automatically. However, I don't want to pay for that if the Really Simple SSL WordPress plugin I've recently installed will serve a similar purpose.

Any thoughts on this? Also, if this isn't the right group for this question, could someone please point me in the right direction? Thanks for any help!

I looked on the Wordpress codex and came to this support inquiry;

Looks like someone else had a similar problem.

For me, it’s worth namecheap’s 7 bucks a year or so.

I keep reading that un-updated plug-ins are the number one pathway for hackers.

Wordpress codex, the Mighty Favog of Wordpress.

But if it isn’t an e-commerce site, do you even need it at all?

Im interested to hear what others think.
