I don’t have signal, but I do have whatsapp. Whatsapp messages are definitely not being ‘routed’ to the text app.

If this is really happening call or text Apple support and ask for help. They are smart, answer quickly, and it is free. As you know Apple is one of the few companies that give a shit about user privacy.
