AVG is becoming a hydra with autorenewals.
AVG, probably through their mass updates, has set autorenewals on my subscription for digital downloads that I don't even use. From driver updates to tune-ups. I am already working through paypal to try to stop these renewals because AVG doesn't give us an easy option through the software we have on our computer. Just putting this out to warn everyone else.
Why I am writing for, however, is to ask what everyone else is using for Internet security and anti-virus software. I am ready to start with something reliable that's simple.

(50,808 posts)Each year they keep adding services, probably through their mass updates with so many links to small print. It's crazy what they do over the years until you're where I am right now. Someone should look into this. It's a juggernaut.

(111,083 posts)of all the embedded Norton crap, no matter how many tech blogs and videos I watch (and follow) describing how to do so. That LifeLock identity protection gets a lot of people to go to Norton, but then the DAILY and even HOURLY pop-ups for more and more and more and more add-ons. And if you dare try them, you get charged for the renewals at $$$$ more than the initial subscription. If you decline or drop some of those add-ons, you continue to get notices about it, suggesting your computer is slow (and it frequently IS) without it. The latter tells me that Norton has left some embedded coding that DOES slow it down making many tempted to renew those features.
These big bloated DO-all packages, Norton or others, have me furious. I don't want to have to spend an hour or more each day DEALING JUST WITH THEM. Personal computers should not require THAT much IT effort.

(345 posts)I rely on Microsoft Defender for cyber security. It's embedded in Windows 10 and 11 and it's free. It's a Microsoft product designed and maintained by the people who write their software. It seems to be working fine for me.
They have a vested interest in making sure their software products are safe and secure.

(6,557 posts)... and as it turns out the "free" version will suit our needs just fine without the bloat. The website confirms that I'm on an auto-renew, but I cannot cancel or modify for unknown reasons (please try again later). Avast and AVG are the same company now... so I suspect their renewal and payment policies are similar.
Good luck!
PS: In our home we're migrating away from Windows to Linux (at the encouragement / insistence of Mr Daisy.) So far, so good. Windows is dual-booted (dual-loaded?) on a desktop PC and we have access to it if it's absolutely necessary. But our day-to-day stuff is on Linux... so we really don't need to pay for extra AV on Windows. The free version or the plain old Windows Defender is enough.

(4,357 posts)I was a long time user of Avast! AV and I installed the free version on every PC I owned. I finally got tired of the nags to upgrade to the paid version and all the notifications telling me what a wonderful job it was doing. So far I have remained virus free w/o it.
