will a cracked screen brick my iphone?

it has been cracked for a while. no additional trauma that i know of, but....
just worked one minute, brick the next.

I suppose you held down the power and home button to force shut down, they tried to restart.

A former supervisor used a well-cracked iPhone 3 for years, still uses it.

However, if yours is done then it's clearly a different matter, two different phones.

I'd try that hard restart, holding down the power and the home keys simultaneously
