Pretty basic but guess what?
You have to get the basics right or you're up the creek no matter how smart you are.

Seems Debian/Ubuntu focused. I can't say what's different with RH variants.

Things are different with openbsd, but that's less frequently found on virtual machines, the concern of the post. I'll look for a guide, but it should be secure off the bat.
