Providence, nurses reach second tentative deal to end strike

Nurses on strike at all eight Providence hospitals across Oregon reached a tentative deal Friday to end the strike that has lasted 43 days.

It’s the second time the nurses union has struck a deal with the hospital chain. Nurses voted overwhelmingly to reject the first pact earlier this month and some indicated privately Friday that they plan to vote no again.

Some frustrated nurses said they don’t feel the latest contract adequately compensates them for the time they worked without a contract last year. Others are unhappy that the new contract doesn’t improve nurses’ own health insurance plans.

Snip: The new deal must be ratified by a majority vote of the union nurses at each hospital. Voting begins Saturday and ends at 4 p.m. Sunday. The nurses will continue to strike during the vote and return to work Wednesday if agreements are ratified, according to the union.
