Educators in the small Sheridan School District 2 just southwest of downtown Denver are set to strike on April 1 after voting overwhelmingly to authorize a walkout earlier this month.

The district in Arapahoe County serves about 800 students and employs roughly 180 staff members. Roughly two-thirds of students come from low-income households — far above the state average.

In recent days, teachers and support staff have ramped up organizing efforts — from picketing along Federal Boulevard to packing meal boxes for students — to ensure kids at all five affected schools will be taken care of during the strike.

“We've been reaching out to every community partner we can think of… to make sure there's still some learning going on, make sure kids are safe and that they have someplace to go if their parents are working,” said Kate Biester, president of the Sheridan Educators Association and social studies teacher.
