'Meadowscaping': The people turning their lawns into meadows

https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20250425-meadowscaping-the-people-turning-their-garden-lawns-into-wild-meadows

Turning lawns into meadows can have big benefits for people, wildlife and the climate. Here's why 'meadowscaping' has become the latest gardening craze.

When Sara Weaner Cooper and her husband bought their first home in Pennsylvania, they knew they didn't want a perfectly manicured front lawn like their neighbours. They wanted something that was more than just turf – a flourishing, wild meadow home to diverse species of plants and animals.

Back yard is totally wild. Front yard gets cut 3-4 times over spring & summer.

POA just need to get over it. Let it grow and savor the oxygen and the air poison being sucked into the Stomata, feed the plants and give us clean air. Win win. My old ass back no longer enjoys mowing.

I've always been a sort of hands-off yardperson. I might throw some seeds out there, but usually I just turn on the water and see what pops up!

The birds brought some mullein seeds a few years ago, those were huge! I've had the occasional sunflower seed from the birdseed get left behind to germinate. I let the grass grow natural, don't really cut it and let it re-seed itself.

Last couple yars since the cat isn't out as much, thye voles are having a field day. Got holes everywhere and they keep the vegetation nipped low. (bunnies too) I got some clover seed and a ton of wildflower native for CA for the side yard. Gonna let it go wild and see where it goes this year!
Can't do anything yet. Probably not till late May/early June. It just snowed another 6" yesterday! Besides, I like to give the bees and bugs time to hatch before messing up the eggs etc...
(and my son is a flake so we'll see how soon he comes to rake! LOL)

I converted 1000 sf of our front yard into a garden with 90% native plants. It's probably the most revolutionary act I've ever done. People stop all the time and tell me they've rerouted their walks so they can see it. The president of our HOA told me it's his favorite yard in the neighborhood. Lots of work at first and lots of fun for years to come!
