EDIT
More than two months after the devastating flood swept through Westernport, its mark remains on the small town of about 1,800 residents. Cars inundated with water during the flood sit abandoned along Maryland Avenue, their doors and trunks left open to reveal interiors splattered with mud. One of the towns emergency access roads is blocked by piles of gravel at both ends of the street, placed there after a residents truck fell into a crater under the pavement. Many residents lost their washers, dryers, water heaters and furnaces when their basements filled with water, and they cant afford to replace the expensive appliances especially not all at once.
Westernport town administrator Laura Freeman Legge said she estimated the towns damages at $10 million, not including the damage to peoples homes and personal property. For a town with an annual budget of about $2 million, many repairs will need to be put on hold, potentially for years.
On Wednesday, the town suffered another hit. The Federal Emergency Management Agency denied a request for $15.8 million to make repairs across Allegany and Garrett counties. The decision came as a shock to local leaders, who said that even after the agency disqualified millions of dollars in damage from the request, the county and state still met thresholds to qualify for assistance. We met the criteria, Westernport Mayor Judy Hamilton said. So, were confused, and we dont understand why we were not given the FEMA assistance.
EDIT
Legge, Westernports town administrator, said that although aid from FEMA wouldnt go directly to residents, it would free up town and county dollars that right now must be allocated to fixing infrastructure. That leaves residents with nowhere to turn while facing expensive repairs. Then we could use our resources to do something, she said, but we cant. Hamilton said the town has secured some funding from the state thanks to Gov. Wes Moore (D), who made just under $1.5 million available for recovery efforts. About 24 households in Allegany County also received help from a nonprofit to replace water heaters, which are especially important to replace before temperatures drop. But its not nearly enough.

(610 posts)To Dems to go into these counties and hold town halls explaining that Trump and the other Republicans are the ones responsible for this. They need to be encouraged to switch their voter registration from Republican to Democrat, and vote reliably blue in order to restore FEMA and help them get the money they need for repairs. Ads need to rerun clips of Trump saying he's going to eliminate FEMA. Show Democrats promising to restore and shore up FEMA if elected and Republicans ousted. Emphasize that Republican politicians are only there to help the ultra-wealthy, and that they despise working and middle class people.

(12,051 posts)Western Maryland is in MD-06, which is represented by April McClain Delaney, who is a relatively new Democratic representative. She and our governor, Wes Moore, were front and center during all of the flooding. Moore has made money available. However, the state is in a deficit because of several issues: cleanup and rebuilding the FSK Bridge; DOGE slashing the Federal workforce; and our former Republican governor's fiscal shenanigans. People are blaming Moore for raising taxes when the State legislature is trying to cover the money that Hogan lost.
My guess is that the good citizens of Western MD are going to forget all about FEMA in 2026 and blame all of their problems on the Democrats - same as usual.

(8,112 posts)Trump is a very vindictive kind of guy. He's not going to care about a county in a state the Democrats carried by 870,000 votes.

(12,051 posts)I have friends in Western MD near LaVale who are Rennies. Fortunately, they weren't directly affected by the flooding, but they knew many who were. People in Western MD are more like West Virginians than Marylanders - living in former industrial area that's now economically depressed. Tied to a state which doesn't always care about their needs.
I'm betting that by election time, they will forget about FEMA turning them down and blame their economic woes on Gov. Moore.
