Alaska Air backs $150 million investment in Gates-led green energy fund

Alaska Air Group (NYSE: ALK) is investing in a green-energy venture fund backed by Bill Gates, in an effort to speed production of sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, for commercial use.

Alaska announced Wednesday that airlines in the Oneworld codeshare alliance will invest $150 million to fund early-stage climate tech companies through the investment arm of Gates' green energy company, Breakthrough Energy.

“In Breakthrough Energy Ventures, we have a partner with the scientific, technical and commercial expertise to make effective investment decisions that will create the market for next-generation fuels and power our industry in the years ahead,” Alaska CEO Ben Minicucci said in a news release.

The investment comes as airlines seek to expedite the production of biofuels to meet requirements set by local and national regulators. However, plant projects can take years to receive approvals and cost millions to build, slowing efforts to bring SAF to market.
