O&G rights chatting with someone

Who doesn't have them. Property owner for 45 years, nurturing 25 acres with trees, wildlife. A strip mining company owns the o&g rights and is planning to develop (destroy) their land. Is there anything they can do?
The person and I happened to be waiting to get our taxes done, a chance meeting. Worst story I've heard in years.

It also depends on if they're coming in vertically or horizontally. Some states have a statutory bar of entry. I would suggest that this property owner first consult their title insurance owners policy, if they have one. Second, consult a real estate attorney skilled in these rights, preferably one with expertise in real property title.
