World's First Heavy-Duty Hydrogen IC Engine Completes Full China VI Emissions Validation

Weichai Power WP15 direct-injection heavy-duty hydrogen internal combustion engine

July 3, 2026 — Weichai Power announced that its WP15 direct-injection heavy-duty hydrogen internal combustion engine has successfully passed official emissions certification, becoming the first heavy-duty hydrogen engine in both China and the world to complete all core validation requirements under China's National VI emissions regulations.

The milestone marks a significant step toward the commercial deployment of zero-carbon power solutions for heavy-duty transportation and industrial equipment.

The WP15 engine completed rigorous testing across the full operating range. Test results showed pollutant emissions well below China's regulatory limits, while carbon dioxide emissions were reduced to near-zero levels. The engine incorporates Weichai's proprietary flexible in-cylinder direct hydrogen injection technology, enabling ultra-low nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. Combined with a simplified aftertreatment system, the engine is designed to meet increasingly stringent future emissions requirements.

Powered by a 14.6-liter engine platform, the WP15 delivers 600 horsepower, 2,800 N·m of peak torque, and a maximum brake thermal efficiency of 46.8%, placing it among the world's leading heavy-duty hydrogen engines in its displacement class. more>
