(15,636 posts)just a plain fact - along with the attendant plain fact that 'rehoming' (or alternative) is simply not a viable (or available) option.
The question then centers around whether 'unaliving' these targeted individuals (or sex/class) - is carried out in a manner which we judge to be a) acceptably (meaning marginally) compassionate, and without undue/unnecessary suffering, pain, stress, etc. - OR b) conversely, is judged to be bearing the marks of unwarranted or unnecessary cruelty.
Where do you think male milk calves (or male 'layer' chicks) (or the deformed/runty stoat in the litter) go to 'live' .. ?
Sorry for the home truths - but a 'quick end' is sometimes a far better option than the alternative (if any) that a lot of these animal face. Starving to death in a locked cage - or a barren lot or pasture? Tossed in a plastic bag to suffocate? Abandoned on a rural country lane - city street or alley - or an interstate rest stop? All representing an extended (and knowable, intentional ?) degree of misery. If there is a choice involved - the bullet to the brain, or bop on the head, is often clearly better one.
And note: I take no position on this particular case - or whether it represents a case of animal cruelty. Merely pointing out that, in many cases, the simple act of shooting an animal - does not automatically represent such.
