Finland has said it expects Russia to further build up troops along their shared border when the war in Ukraine ends, after reports that Moscow had strengthened its military bases near the NATO frontier. Head of strategy of Finnish defense forces says they are monitoring Moscow’s maneuvering ‘very closely’.

Of all countries in Europe, Finland seems to have the healthiest dose of cynicism towards Russia and its long-term historical intentions. Dealing with Russia from a position of strength and unity is Finland’s skill, making the best of a tough geographic situation, while preparing for the worst. This preparedness, resilience and unity of purpose is something Western Europe ought to pay more attention to and seek to emulate.
