Palestinians flee Gaza City as Israel says first stages of assault have begun

Large numbers of Palestinians are continuing to flee Gaza City after the Israeli military began the first stages of a planned ground offensive, officials in the city say.

Israel's troops have established a foothold on the outskirts of the city - which is home to more than a million Palestinians - after days of intense bombing and artillery fire.

It has prompted UN Secretary General António Guterres to renew calls for an immediate ceasefire "to avoid the death and destruction" an assault would "inevitably cause".

Israel wants to signal that it is pressing ahead with its plan to capture all of Gaza City despite international criticism.

They want the war to end NOW. To save the hostages. Because Hamas would release them if there was a ceasefire. Lo and behold, Hamas has just agreed to a ceasefire which Netanyahu has once again spurned by pushing on with his "total conquest".

Only the right-wing in Israel - and their supporters - wants this "war" to continue. Knowing full well it would ENDANGER the hostages.

Seems disingenuous - or something - to demand the release of the hostages as a condition of stopping the slaughter, and then go on to actually slaughter the hostages.

Because it's not really about the hostages, is it?

And of course the slaughter of Palestinians doesn't even enter into the equation for the right-wingers. Because they're not equal...or something, something.

Just finishing off what the bombs left behind, which wasn't all that much.

Getting it ready for the Israeli settlers (more than a million planned). There might be the odd resort, but realistically who in their right mind or possessing a conscience would build or vacation there?

Building resorts was not what this was ever about. Greater Israel was.
