In first, two major Israeli human rights groups accuse Israel of 'genocide' in Gaza

B’Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights on Monday published a report accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza, becoming the first major Israeli human rights organizations to join a list of international groups making the charge.

“An examination of Israel’s policy in the Gaza Strip and its horrific outcomes, together with statements by senior Israeli politicians and military commanders about the goals of the attack, leads to the unequivocal conclusion that Israel is taking coordinated, deliberate action to destroy Palestinian society in the Gaza Strip,” reads a statement presenting the report. “In other words: Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. ”

A growing number of Israel’s international critics have accused it of genocide in its war against Hamas — some even in the days immediately following the terror group’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel that killed some 1,200 people and took 251 hostages and sparked the fighting.

Major human rights organizations such as Amnesty International have endorsed the charge as the death toll in Gaza has mounted. But this is the first time that leading Israeli human rights watchdogs have made the accusation.

Literary giant and peace activist tells Italy’s La Repubblica that the very use of the word in association with Israel signals devastating moral collapse tied to ‘the occupation’

Award-winning Israeli author David Grossman called the country’s campaign in Gaza a “genocide” on Friday for the first time, noting that he uses the term with “immense pain and a broken heart,” in conversation with the Italian daily La Repubblica.

His comments came amid rising global alarm and anger over widespread hunger in the war-torn territory due to the insufficient entry of food.

“For many years, I refused to use that term, ‘genocide,’” the prominent writer and peace activist told the newspaper. “But now, after the images I have seen and after talking to people who were there, I can’t help but use it.

This word is an avalanche: Once you say it, it just gets bigger, like an avalanche. And it adds even more destruction and suffering,” he said. “Even just saying that word — ‘genocide’ — in reference to Israel, to the Jewish people, the fact that such a comparison is even being made, tells us that something very bad is happening to us.”

Grossman’s works, which have been translated into dozens of languages, have won many international prizes.

He also won Israel’s top literary prize in 2018, the Israel Prize for Literature, for his work spanning more than three decades.

Jeremy Ben-Ami explains he has been ‘persuaded rationally’ by legal and scholarly arguments, stresses that though he won’t use term himself, he won’t argue against it either

By JTA and Jacob Magid

Days after rejecting the claim that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, Jeremy Ben-Ami, president of the liberal Zionist advocacy and lobby group J Street, has said he has been “persuaded” that he was wrong.

Ben-Ami’s about-face makes him the latest in a growing list of prominent left-wing Jewish US voices to lodge the accusation, which Israel denies and which US President Donald Trump rejected on Sunday.

In a newsletter Sunday marking Tisha B’Av, a day of mourning to commemorate catastrophes throughout Jewish history, Ben-Ami recalled his parents’ experience with the Holocaust and laid out Hamas’s crimes against Israel, including the Palestinian terror group’s October 7, 2023, attack that killed 1,200 people, resulted in 251 hostages and triggered the ongoing war.

“Yet none of that provides any rationale for what Israel is doing now in Gaza,” wrote Ben-Ami. “Denying food and basic necessities of life to civilians. Soldiers shooting at civilians trying to get food. Destruction of the entire infrastructure of Gaza. Forcing the population into intolerably small areas. Hoping to create the conditions under which an entire population will be forcibly displaced.”

Ben-Ami said he was “unlikely to use the term myself” due to his own family’s experience during the Holocaust. But he said he had still made a shift in his own thinking.

“I cannot and will not argue any more against those using the term. I simply won’t defend the indefensible.”

“Until now, I have tried to deflect and defend when challenged to call this genocide,” he wrote. “I have, however, been persuaded rationally by legal and scholarly arguments that international courts will one day find that Israel has broken the international genocide convention.”

Ben-Ami’s commentary came days after he repeatedly rejected the claim that Israel is committing a genocide in an appearance on “Pod Save the World” in a debate with the pro-Palestinian US journalist Mehdi Hasan.

The stark shift in Ben-Ami’s stance underscores a sharp waning in support for Israel as claims of mass starvation in the embattled enclave have ratcheted up in recent weeks.

J Street, which characterizes itself as pro-Israel and pro-peace and lobbies lawmakers in Washington to adopt policies that advance a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, appears to be one of the most prominent Jewish American groups to legitimize the use of the term “genocide.”
