On Temple Mount, Ben Gvir calls for Gaza takeover, 'voluntary emigration' of Palestinians

National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir calls for Israel to conquer the Gaza Strip and “encourage voluntary emigration” of Palestinians from the territory, in a video statement from the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

“From [the Temple Mount] — the place where we’ve proven sovereignty is possible — we must send a message: conquer all of Gaza, declare sovereignty over the entire Strip, eliminate every Hamas member, and encourage voluntary emigration. This is the only way that we will return the hostages and win the war,” he says in the video posted to his personal Twitter account.

The far-right minister adds that “Hamas’ horrific videos” are meant to pressure Israel, referring to harrowing videos of hostages Rom Braslavski and Evyatar David, both appearing emaciated, released by Hamas in recent days.

Earlier in the visit, Ben Gvir was seen joining a prayer minyan and leading the “Amida” prayer, marking the first time a government minister has openly prayed at the site, where Jews are forbidden from praying under the longtime status quo agreement between Israel and Jordan.

1. Jordan blasts Ben Gvir's Temple Mount visit as 'unacceptable provocation and escalation'

Jordan’s Foreign Ministry slams National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir’s visit to the flashpoint Temple Mount site, calling it a “blatant violation of international law” and an “unacceptable provocation and escalation.”

In a statement posted on X, the ministry says Ben Gvir’s presence is a “blatant violation of the historic and legal status quo” of the holy site.

It calls on Israel to stop such actions by Ben Gvir and asserts that only Muslim prayer is permitted at the Temple Mount — the location of the Al Aqsa Mosque and Dome of the Rock.

If you can't call this government what it is – Kahanist, extremist, eager to burn down what remains of the state – you're not standing with Israel. You're standing in the way of any chance it has left to change.

Israel's Ugly Kahanist Face Steps Onto the World Stage

Haaretz Editorial
Feb 5, 2024

Kahanism's spread in Israel is no longer any secret. Israel's ugly Kahanist face was on display this week in the pages of the Wall Street Journal, which published an article about National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir that included an interview with him.

Ben-Gvir used this respected platform to threaten Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "Netanyahu is at a crossroads," Ben-Gvir warned, and must now "choose in what direction he'll go." He added that he himself would probably oppose any deal that led to the release of thousands of terrorists or the end of the war in the Gaza Strip.

Ben-Gvir thereby exemplified the mutually exploitative relationship that helps both him and Netanyahu to survive politically. Ben-Gvir has hitched a ride on Netanyahu's lack of other political options, while Netanyahu uses Ben-Gvir as a counterweight to diplomatic pressure on Israel.

It's true that without Ben-Gvir, Netanyahu wouldn't have a government, since there isn't a single person in Israel's political system who believes so much as a word he says. But it's also true that thanks to Ben-Gvir, Netanyahu can continue his policy of claiming "my hands are tied" in the face of American demands that he move forward on a two-state solution, and more generally in any discussion of the postwar situation.

Yet Ben-Gvir didn't make do with flexing his muscles in the domestic arena. He also decided to provoke U.S. President Joe Biden and fawn over Donald Trump. This was apparently out of a hope that Trump would win the next U.S. presidential election and a belief that Trump would give Israel a green light to move forward with the criminal transfer plan that Ben-Gvir and his colleagues on the far right are advocating. "Instead of giving us his full backing, Biden is busy with giving humanitarian aid and fuel, which goes to Hamas," Ben-Gvir claimed. "If Trump was in power, the U.S. conduct would be completely different."

These statements endanger Israel's relations with America. Thus a prime minister whose chief concern was the welfare of the country would have ousted Ben-Gvir and all his fellow supporters of the transfer and annexation program from his government. But then, a prime minister who was guided by the country's interests would never have appointed someone like this as a minister in the first place or maintained any kind of political partnership with him.

Netanyahu, however, managed to produce a response that said nothing and promised nothing. It didn't even mention Ben-Gvir by name, lest his base, heaven forbid, turn against him. Ben-Gvir and Netanyahu, both separately and together, are a danger to Israel's future. A society that wants to survive must demand their ouster from public life. If they remain in power, Israel will continue deteriorating and its international standing will be destroyed.

13 Facts about the Temple Mount / Haram al-Sharif and the Struggle of the Temple Movements

What is the Status Quo on the Temple Mount / Haram al-Sharif?

The Status Quo was established by Israel in 1967. The decision was to leave the day-to-day management of the site in the hands of the Islamic Waqf and to allow only Muslim prayer. This decision was reinforced by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel, which prohibited Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount / Haram al-Sharif for halakhic reasons. The Status Quo enshrines the priority of Muslim prayer over any other activity on the compound, including Jewish visitation or ascent to the Mount. Both sides refrained from formulating the understandings in writing. The central challenge to the Status Quo began with the ascent of Temple Movements and their demand to pray on the Mount.

I am glad that I was able go. It was a wonderful experience. I would never dream of praying there, or wearing or carrying Judaica there. It is a Muslim holy site, regardless of the presence of the Jewish Temple there 200 years ago. This was a deliberately provocative move by an extremist Israeli minster who is trying to destroy the few vestiges of peace that remain for political and religious reasons. I could continue, but that is enough for now.

And doing it again today was to excite some religious Jews to approve of him and his actions further. Today is Tisha B'Av, a fast day to commemorate the destruction of the first and second Hebrew temples (built and destroyed on that site).

https://www.jewishpress.com/news/israel/temple-mount-har-habayit/ben-gvir-permits-jews-to-pray-sing-and-dance-across-temple-mount/2025/06/27/

The Jewish Press

"Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir visits the Temple Mount in the capital's Old City on Jerusalem Day, May 26, 2025.

Jewish visitors were permitted to sing and dance openly throughout the entire Temple Mount compound on Wednesday, following a policy directive issued by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

The development represents a dramatic change from past practice, where Jewish prayer—even whispered—on the Temple Mount could lead to arrest, detention or being barred from the site for months.

For decades, Israeli police enforced strict limitations on Jewish religious expression on the Mount, citing security concerns and maintaining the status quo agreement with the Waqf Islamic trust that administers the site.

However, under Ben-Gvir’s new guidelines, police have been instructed to allow Jewish prayers and songs throughout the compound, according to Israel National News."

This will ensure the level of hatred towards Israel in the Muslim world will be even worse and decent-minded people of the world will condemn Israel even more. But Ben-Gvir probably doesn't give a shit or maybe that doesn't even concern him. His crazy bravado screams "bring it on".

Of course Netanyahu won't even give him a slap on the wrist.

Israelis on the left must be shaking in disbelief and anger. I can't imagine what Muslims and Palestinians are feeling - or thinking.

Rabbis forbid Jews from ascending to the Temple Mount due to not knowing where the Holy of Holies was located. Only a Cohen is supposed to enter that area, and only on one day of the year. What ever happened to that edict?
Ben Gvir is scum, and should be in jail, and his party outlawed.
