Footage shows second Israeli strike hitting rescue workers at Nasser Hospital after initial blast

Graphic footage from the Israeli attack on Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis shows a strike hitting rescue workers following an initial strike.

The IDF has not yet commented.

According to Palestinian media, at least 14 were killed in the strikes, including three journalists.

In a video uploaded onto the internet on Monday, you could have watched the Israeli attack on the Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis in southern Gaza in real time.

The Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza (under the control of Hamas) reported that initially, the fourth floor of the medical institution was attacked, and later, the medical team that came to rescue and treat the injured from the first explosion came under attack, too. We were witnesses to a war crime broadcast live.

Nasser – the only hospital still operating in southern Gaza – reported that at least 20 people had been killed in the attack, including five journalists and photographers and four medical personnel.

They also reported many injured, including journalists and medical staff. The dead include Hussam al-Masri, a Reuters photographer in Gaza; Mohammed Salama, who worked for the broadcaster Al Jazeera; and Moaz Abu Taha, a freelance journalist.

They also included Mariam Abu Dagga, who freelanced for the Associated Press. In announcing her death, AP said Abu Dagga often reported from Nasser Hospital on "doctors struggling to save children … wasting away from starvation."

Her last reports, it wrote, dealt with the hospital's doctors trying to save lives despite the lack of medical equipment and food.

How can you justify repeated attacks on a hospital, especially when Gaza's healthcare system is practically shut down, in the midst of an unprecedented humanitarian crisis and famine that the whole world is talking about? How do you explain the killing of journalists (245 since the start of the war)? Let the Israel Defense Forces try to explain.

The IDF spokesman reported that Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir had ordered "an initial investigation immediately" and added that "the IDF regrets any harm to non-combatants, in no way directs attacks at journalists as such, and works as much as possible to minimize harm to them while maintaining the safety of our troops."

This is how it works: Blow up a hospital, kill journalists and express regret. The propaganda strategy is transparent: It is not a war crime because the IDF "regrets" what happened.

The army's regret is meaningless because the violations are a recurring phenomenon. If this is how things look when the IDF is working to reduce harm to non-combatants and avoid harming journalists, then the situation is worse than ever.

Either it is lying or it is engaged in a cover-up, or both, and not for the first time.

This war needs to end immediately. Israel needs to wake up to reality, give up on the scandalous plan to occupy Gaza City and instead sign a deal releasing the hostages and withdrawing its troops from the Gaza Strip. Monday's hospital attack must mark the end of the war.
