A gay couple faced vulgar harassment. A neighbor helped find the suspect with a handwriting sample.

A community in Norfolk County, Mass., is rallying around a gay married couple who has quietly endured homophobic harassment since their son was a toddler.

It started when a subscription to Wired Magazine landed on LeeMichael McLean and Bryan Furze’s doorstep five years ago. To their horror, the subscription — which they did not order — had their home address, but the name on the address label was not theirs. Instead it was an obscene play on words and overtly homophobic.

“A few days later, we got another one, and I knew we had a problem,” said McLean, 44.

Since the first piece of hate mail arrived, a steady stream of letters and subscriptions to various magazines, all addressed to their home with a vulgar name, have been periodically delivered to the couple, who live in the town of Milton with their 7-year-old son, Simon.
