Christian teachings to be protected from conversion therapy ban, says Government

Christian teachings will be protected from the ban on conversion therapy, the Government has promised church leaders.

Officials from the Government’s Equality Office met with religious leaders after more than 2,500 church leaders wrote to Liz Truss, the minister for women and equalities, warning that they are willing to be “criminalised” if a proposed ban stops them from teaching their faith.

The minister of Trinity Church in York, Rev Dr Matthew Roberts, said that during the meeting this week, they were “very, very clear that there is no intention to criminalise Christian teaching”.

Plans to ban gay and transgender conversion therapy were delayed last December amid growing disquiet that they would criminalise parents, teachers and therapists from exploring issues, particularly about gender identity.
