Don't say anti-gay: GOP senators insist they're only coming after trans rights, not gay rights

Don't say anti-gay: As GOP approval for same-sex relationships plummets, Republican senators insist they're only coming after trans rights, not gay rights

Bryan Metzger Jun 26, 2023, 5:45 PM EDT

• Recent polling shows that Republican approval for same-sex relationships plummeted last year.
• It comes amid a broader backlash on the right against Pride and transgender rights.
• GOP senators insist they don't hear about it from their voters — and that trans issues are different.

As the Senate Judiciary Committee kicked off a hearing on LGBTQ+ rights last week, Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina sought to draw a clear distinction between same-sex marriage — once at the center of the culture wars — and the Republican Party's recent targeting of civil rights for trans people.

"You mentioned that eight years ago, the Obergefell decision created a constitutional right to same-sex marriage," said Graham. "We're not talking about that here — we're talking about other things here."

But if GOP leaders are mainly concerned with the "TQ+" in LGBTQ+ while leaving the other parts of the acronym alone, the rank and file don't seem to be listening.

If they erase the TQ+ THE LGB is next. There is no stopping after one group. Sadly there are a few LGB falling for the bullshit of getting rid of us trans people as a sacrifice not knowing they are next in line. The LGBTQ+ community needs to stick together. Not divide.

The smaller the a marginalized group, the bigger the targets they become. Lindsey seems to be implying, in a seemingly self-serving manner, that certain people are "OK" with conservatives, while the "TQ" folks are "rightfully" persecuted.
