Toothpaste widely contaminated with lead and other metals, US research finds

Most of 51 brands tested, including those for children, contained dangerous heavy metal

Toothpaste can be widely contaminated with lead and other dangerous heavy metals, new research shows.

Most of 51 brands of toothpaste tested for lead contained the dangerous heavy metal, including those for children, or marketed as green. The testing, conducted by Lead Safe Mama, also found concerning levels of highly toxic arsenic, mercury and cadmium in many brands.

Among those found to contain the toxins were Crest, Sensodyne, Tom’s of Maine, Dr Bronner’s, Davids, Dr Jen and others.

So far, none of the companies Lead Safe Mama checked have said they will work to get lead out of their product, Rubin said. Several sent her cease-and-desist letters, which she said she ignored, but also posted on her blog.

The state of Washington recently enacted a law with 1,000 ppb limits – several exceeded that and have been reported, Rubin said, but companies have time to get in compliance with the new rules.

So, those American Dental Association stamps of approval include lead contaminated products. That's encouraging. Silent Type Apr 17 #1

As an analytical chemist these results are unsurprising but not of concern. NNadir Apr 17 #5

As the FF’s administration continues cutting agencies we need to tell parents that this is what he wants. Sacrifice your family’s health so they can have a bigger tax cut.

Joke: because of the lead.
Not a joke: holy WTF. The Guardian is no clown outfit.

Analytical chemistry is now exceedingly sensitive.

The major source of lead (and for that matter mercury) is the combustion of fossil fuels, in particular coal.

Burning wood that grew in the mid-20th century also releases lead, as a result of the incorporation of lead from leaded fuels.

Detection is different than being actionable. I doubt there are very few items of common experience in which lead cannot be detected. It was long a component of soder in residential plumbing.

I can (and have detected) detect radon in my basement from the decay of natural uranium in my soils. Although radon is thought to be the 3rd largest contributor to lung cancer after smoking and lung cancer, I'm not particularly worried.

While I would agree that mass insanity is clearly rising and may in fact be related in many cases to heavy metals, I suspect toothpaste is not a major player.

I wouldn't go full RFK crazy over this report.
