Really good scripts have been chopped into chum by bad editing, bad direction, or both. But, as you said, Emma gave it her best shot. I've always liked her work.
A classic example of an actor being blamed for someone else's boner: George Clooney being vilified because there were nipples on Batman's suit. Clooney was NOT the costume designer!
I remember David Mamet, who lived in Vermont at the time, choosing to film in a neighboring state because Vermont didn't look enough like Vermont. My estimation of Mamet's judgement took a nosedive with that revelation.
