Related: About this forumAnyone used Gentle Cure for Basal Cell Carcinoma?
I had a biopsy done today that the dermatologist believes is Basal Cell. Ill have official results in a few days.
She told me to think about two options: MOH surgery (usually one visit and youre done) or GentleCure (about 20 short visits).
I wanted to know if anyone has any experience with GentleCure.
I feel lucky to have caught this reasonably early and to actually have options!!! Thanks in advance for any input.

(9,601 posts)It was a one and done procedure and I have had no recurrence. That was five years ago.
Totally unremarkable scar on the bridge of my nose.

(10 posts)Yes,I did the gentle cure last year for a basal cell on the crease of nose...wonderful experience, esp.after enduring 2x MOH surgery a few years ago.it was (12) 15/20 min treatments( they have to tape area to pinpoint)then ZAP!...onto next appt. You can visually watch the basal cell area get healed on a monitor, mounted on side of machine.
I would HIGHLY recommend..you will be pleased.hanna

(16,419 posts)As a total needle phobe, I'm leaning toward this. I was lucky to get through the needle stick for the biopsy today without fainting!
I've heard horror stories about MOH's hitting nerves, etc. Of course, you always hear the bad stuff, but for my own mental health, if I can avoid being cut, etc., I will be more emotionally at ease.

(2,234 posts)The dermatologist offered MOH surgery or radiation - 20 visits. I assume GentleCure is the radiation that was mentioned to me. The only radiation I know of that can be set so that it does not continue through tissue behind the target is proton beam.
I just looked it up. GentleCure is x-rays. Low dose radiation but 20 doses. That adds up. I'm pretty sure they will angle the beams to spread the radiation - spread and minimize the damage - but the x-rays will engage tissue behind the primary target. The company that sells GentleCure is focusing on tissue beside the target, not mentioning tissue behind the target. Our "health care" system is a for profit setup.
We need to do our homework.

(7,035 posts)Gentle Cure, but I would rather avoid the radiation, even in limited amounts, that are necessary with gentle cure. Plus the extra sessions probably means more out of pocket costs.

(10 posts)Sorry, the amt of radiation is LESS than @dentist & the area to be zapped is literally "pinpointed" by the area taping..there is NO widespread radiation & no damage to surrounding tissue.hanna

(2,234 posts)In my case, side of my face, the radiation would be adding to what I have gotten over the years from dentists.

(10 posts)With Humana Gold Plus(HMO),it cost me $5/visit.did I mention..no scar..& no multiple lidocaine needle shots in basal cell area.try it ,you will not be overly radiated & you will not dread a,maybe, reoccurence of a basal/squamous diagnosis elsewhere on body.hanna

Sorry, I see that you gave a time line in your first post. Apologies.
Thank you.

(7,387 posts)All were on the face. All would do it again if necessary.
I know nothing about Gentle Cure, but 20 visits would be an issue for transportation. My husband and I have both had large doses of radiation for cancer which limits the idea of using any more when there is another option.
