Prednisone Questions
I started having sinus infection symptoms at the end of May. They weren't going away with normal methods, so I called my PCP on June 5. He gave me 5 days of prednisone. The sinus pain in my head went away, as well as nasal congestion but my ears remained a bit stuffy. I had a bp and blood work check at end of July. I told my doc they were still felt stuffy. He gave me flonase.
Well that didnt help my ears got plugged worse and now my left ear has tinitus in it and my hearing is less. I went to urgent care last Saturday. The NP prescribed Allegra and 5 whole pill Prednisone and 4 half pill Prednisone.
I took the 5 days nothing changed only got worse. Not only that it caused me several panic attacks and I was driving my poor sister nuts. Calling her saying I was going to get meningitis again, or have a stroke, or go deaf. So yesterday I called my PCP again. He got me in, said he thinks my ears are now infected. He gave me an antibiotic, told me to go back on flonase,& continue the allegra. I also explained about the panic attacks caused by Prednisone.
The only thing is he wanted me to take today's half a pill of prednisone. I don't want to take it because my anxiety is still over the moon, and my sinus headache is back. Did not respond to Tylenol yesterday, or Advil today. My sister called Pharmacy and asked if I could just stop it yesterday morning before I saw my doctor. Pharmacist said since it was only five days, of full he didn't see an issue but check back with doctor. So I am torn what to do. I really don't think I can get through another panic day? My doctor is off today, and I don't want the staff to think I am a problem patient. I don't see how a half a pill would make a difference in the underlying illness but I know your supposed to taper off, and don't want to risk other side effects, if there would be. The pharmacist did say 20 MG for 5 days wasn't that big a dose, but he didn't know I was on it, for five days in June. Should I call my Psychiatrist and ask her what to, or the NP my insurance company has come see me every three months to ask if it's okay to skip, or will they just tell me to listen to my PCP?
Not asking for medical advice just whether or not you think it would be worth checking with Psychiatrist office or NP from insurance? Sorry this is so long. I am just scared.

(4,551 posts)I think I will call the Mental Health providers since they have known me and my issues longer than the PCP.

(56,394 posts)compromise and take 1/4 pill. LOL that way you "tapered" but are taking so little it will hopefully not have the side effects much at all.

(4,551 posts)The nurse said the same thing. As long as he said the 1/2 day today was the last one to take anyway don't worry about taking it especially since I took Advil and you're not supposed to take them together.

(5,115 posts)it truly does mess with your head. I don't get panic attacks from it, but it gives me insomnia and general ill-ease, even while it unblocks my sinuses. A couple of suggestions (I'm a sinus infection pro--I've had multiple surgeries to open up my sinuses into my nose--you could drive a school bus up there!):
Have you tried Navage? This is a sort of power neti pot, which is a nuisance to use, but it did help me a lot.
Is there any way you could try using oxygen at night *with* the humidifier attachment? This has been a life-saver for me.
Failing those two, I have found Nasacort much more helpful than Flonase. I don't know why Flonase is the be-all and end-all for doctors to recommend, but truly, Nasacort is better.
Try filling a mixing bowl with warm salt water and slurping it up your nose.
I know this is a rotten problem, and I hope you're able to find something that helps without having to take prednisone.

(4,551 posts)I haven't tried Navage but I will look into it, as I do get frequent sinus infections. Most go away on their own but occasionally I get one that will just hang on and cause complications like this one. I will look into the Nasacort too once I finish this course of the prescription flonase.
My sister just told me there is a huge thread going on my local Facebook page about sinus infections, allergies, and Asthma issues. We have been getting air quality alerts for days on end because of the wild fires in Canada drifting pollutants into New York. People with asthma are saying their inhalers aren't helping, lots of sinus issues, and people missing work because of respiratory distress. One person said using your AC doesn't necessarily help completely because anytime you have to go out your doors the air is getting in your house. So I think this maybe why this is hanging on. Luckily there isn't an alert for today, so hopefully they break will help.

(5,660 posts)For me hyperactivity, shakiness, high blood sugar, high blood pressure, racing thoughts, trouble concentrating, weight gain are the most apparent short term symptoms. Long term - full blown metabolic disorder and adrenal gland dysfunction.
Mayo has a detailed list of symptoms:

(4,551 posts)I am sorry you had to go through all that. The doctor said the dose I was on was relatively small but I was definitely experiencing the racing thoughts and trouble concentrating. I am off of it now. They gave me Antibiotics instead.
