Transference is one of the most devious and unnecessary aspects of psychology. There are countless tales online of people who bought into the deception and were unable to disconnect, or felt harmed, or suffer long term emotional pain because they accepted the delusion and thought it was real. Some, worse, became involved with their therapists. Pulling on people's heart strings for medical care? To me an absurdity and avoidable if full disclosure occurred up front. The idea that it's good and is the only way to work on vulnerabilites in a therapeutic environment?
Jeffrey Masson's "Final Analysis" revealed a lot about the psychology profession by exposing Freud's compromises with Victorian high society. In my view, Masson did a great service to the misled masses.

compelled to conclude that it has no bearing on the scientific issues with whi ch
psychoanalysis concerns itself, owing to the inherent invalidity of ad hominem
arguments. Furthermore, Masson's case is weakened by his misunderstandi ng of
Freud's views on seduction and external reality, of the essence of the seduction
theory as Freud formulated it.
Finally, the imposing challenge of integrating the events of Freud's personal
life with the development of his ideas, in addition to assessing the accuracy of
Masson 's characterological data , remains to be met. In my opinion, it would be
most fruitfully undertaken by a psychologist of genius possessing not only the
requisite skills for historical investigation, but also a thorough understanding of
psychoanalysis.
