Related: About this forumWent from gas to induction recently
and there's a learning curve. But I can boil a pot in just a few minutes!
The old stove had been dying for some time, but ya know how ya just get used to things and try to work around it? 45 minutes to preheat, 25 minutes to boil, buttons that don't do anything, burners that went out for no reason. It's so old that I can't remember when we got it. We had it worked on several times but then it just kept telling us it did not want to live with us any more!
Had to get a few pots but mainly already had cookware that works. I will NOT miss cleaning those heavy grates.
Trying to get the bull that lives with me to not shake pans or crash cast iron down.
Any tips to share?

(1,480 posts)But I cant complain too much because he does most of the cooking. Good luck - I have no tips for you, unfortunately. My only experience with induction is eating at the Melting Pot, yum!

(2,335 posts)I too was a commercial kitchen type cook, always banging pots and crash -stirring pans. Keeping in mind the expense of replacing a cracked cook surface helped me get over it. Now I enjoy the much better regulated and easily repeated heat levels and, of course, the ease of cleaning. I used to be on propane for the gas and didnt like the bills. Now my solar array has eliminated that cost entirely.
BTW, I bought LG but wouldnt again. Mine broke 3 times and the repair people hated how hard it was to work on. It was down for weeks at a time. If youre thinking of buying, check the user reviews for whatever you buy. Im guessing theyre all getting better. Theyve been mandated in Europe for years so Id look at those brands.

(16,730 posts)and I did absolutely no research this time because I am starting to get too old to fret over appliances. Went with GE that has a removable tray in the bottom and was quick to be delivered.
So far very easy to clean! What I never could master was keeping the space in the door clean. Like how does stuff even get in between the glass and the door?

(15,852 posts)I think it was LG was rated highly... Next was GE...
To get my feet wet with induction I was gonna just get a portable two burner and see if I like it...
I had gas in my old place and liked it. I now have electric and it sucks...Temp's all over the place..

I also have an Instant Pot which does most of my food/heating and cooking.
And a slow cooker full of always-hot water for various heating and cooking needs.
The gas stove/oven, which was from about 1968, developed a gas leak. The neighbor smelled it and called the gas company to check it out. Anyway, it was so rusted and corroded that it's not usable or repairable and he shut its gas supply off, and told me he put a leak detector in, and if I tried to use it again, he would disconnect me at the meter.
As for induction, I would probably have to upgrade my wiring from what I read. That might include some of the homeowner association's wiring / equipment.

(16,730 posts)for outdoor use and my husband's beer brewing. Cooking with gas was great until it wasn't.
The pilot light on the stove went out and the house filled with the awful sulphur smell and many times I just smelled gas here and there and I am sensitive to it. I won't miss that!

(25,962 posts)I had a pilot go out twice and a leaky propane tank.
I had gotten a leftover tank from the days when everything was in short supply, and the propane company (along with the fire department) cinched it down tight and delivered a new tank the next business day.
Yes, they have a 24-hour emergency line.
I'd shut off the stove entirely but the shutoff is way behind it and unreachable without pulling the entire unit.
Small electrics work fine for me anyway.

(16,730 posts)and I'm a super smeller so I always knew when the stove was on. Drove me crazy when the burner would go out but nobody else was smelling anything. And to be fair, the low setting would go out often.
Also, we had to use a lighter to light some of the burners. For a few days, I was still reaching into the drawer to grab the lighter. I'm back to learning how to use knobs.
The gas connection for this one is in the cabinet next to the stove. Had to be capped and it was still a chore!

(10,658 posts)I'll need to do a little kitchen remodeling before it makes sense, but I've wanted one for a while. I'll have to get some new pots too, but a small price to pay. No tips, but simply a little jealousy.
