my 9 year old over the range micorwave oven "died" last night and came back from the dead

today! All I did was unplug it and wait 15 minutes, then plug it back in!

My question is: what happened? Does this mean it's on its last legs? How long do microwave ovens last, on average, anyway?

I've been told that basically I just "rebooted" its little computer. Who knew you could reboot a microwave oven?

When you yank open the door, the switches in the latching mechanism turn off the power to the magnetron. If the switch doesn't open quickly enough, the current to the magnetron spikes because it is now trying to flood the kitchen with microwaves and the fuse blows.

I had a project for which I needed a transfomer from a dead microwave, so I advertised a wanted ad on freecycle. It took three microwaves before someone finally brought me one that was actually dead.
