We adopted a cat today!

We’re both in our seventies, so we adopted a six year old female named Munchkin. Right now she’s hiding in the laundry room. We hope she comes out eventually!

I had three foster kittens who went this week to the local Petsmart for visibility. I’m hoping that they all find great homes!

But I’m old and I don’t want my animals to outlive me; don’t want my daughter to have to rehome a number of pets. So for any young ones who come my way, I try to get them into a rescue that will find them good homes.

You probably already know this, but be sure to give her time to get accustomed to her new surroundings and to you. Each cat is different. My previous cat, Boots, hid for 10 days when I first got her. The only way I even knew I had a cat was I had to refill the food and water bowls and scoop out the litter box every day. After the 10 days, she was my constant companion.

As for my current cats, Holly and Martini, it took years for Holly to warm up to me and I'm not exaggerating, whereas Martini adjusted immediately. She made herself right at home from day one, as if she had lived here her entire life.

I am so excited for you and I hope you and Munchkin have many, many happy years together!

But today he likes to know where everyone is, he's become a lap cat - and I'm sure that your Munchkin will too when she realizes how lucky she is!

First, thanks SO much for adopting and giving one a good and loving home. That makes me SO happy to know that one is in good hands!!!

It can take them a good thirty days to decompress, particularly if they've been in a noisy, crowded shelter. Please give her plenty of patience and I'm certain she will warm up soon. Please just let her go at her own pace as they are all (just like us!!!) individuals. Make sure she has a space that is just hers. A room (sounds like that's the laundry room, and that's terrific!!!), or a crate with the door left open. Some quiet with good food and water. She is getting used to a new life and new people.

I’m trying not to be too much in her way as she explores the house, and she is exploring everything now. I didn’t know cats could take so long to adjust, or needed a place of their own so thank you for mentioning those things.

As she realizes she is safe, she will unwind. When you see her in her first absolutely peaceful and deep sleep, you will understand what I'm talking about. It's not a cat nap. It's an "I'm safe and I'm finally home and I can relax and rest" kind of sleep.

Were they able to tell you anything about her history? You don't have to share that here. But if she's six years old, she's had a history obviously.

Again, I cannot stress enough how grateful I am that you adopted. We have a HORRIBLE overpopulation issue in Texas. Cats can be TNR'd ("Trap, Neutered and Returned&quot , at least, which is better than being euthanized. Dogs cannot be. I see SO MANY idiots who don't have a pot to piss in that are posting somewhere that they want to buy a dog or cat from a breeder when so many at the shelters and rescues have no homes. So for the people who adopt, I wish them only good things. Thank you for being responsible and kind. May you and your new family member have many happy years together.

They were extremely busy. There was a troop of Girl Scouts visiting the cat room and spilling out into the reception area. Actually, they don’t usually do adoptions on Saturday, but the supervisor was there and approved us. I’m glad we brought our cat carrier just in case.

I think it was the sound of me scraping our plates after dinner that did it. She circled around the living room once, let us pet her, and now she’s hiding in here with us under a … oh she’s out of hiding now and coming to each of us for pets! She is just adorable!

So happy for you and the family!

I adopted a pair of ferals in July. They are now about one year old and have settled in nicely.

Glad to read to saved a kitty!

I didn’t think about it too much. I just went with my instinct … and it felt right. My husband went with my lead. She’s a dark tiger cat with yellow eyes. I’ll try to get a picture of her tomorrow.
