On July 15, 1979, Jimmy Carter went on TV.

Jimmy Carter TV speech tonight 1979 on “crisis of confidence”: "We are at a turning point…One…path leads to fragmentation and self-interest…All the promises of our future point to another path...of common purpose and the restoration of American values”:

...one of Jimmy Carter's flaws was that he could be overly moralistic, and lapse into Sunday School teacher for the nation.

I was pleased to vote for him twice and I do think he was a great man in many ways, but I'm ambivalent about his Presidency, particularly with respect to his energy policies, which viewed in retrospect (although I thought them wonderful at the time) were unwise.

In particular his effort to offer the US as a "moral example" on foregoing nuclear fuel reprocessing was a very poor decision. This said, the technology that would have been employed, the Purex process would have been less ideal than other options available to us now. We also have some nicely aged used nuclear fuels that may offer us a option for low risk piloting of better options.
