Two CT men did 30 years for murder on the basis of a forensics expert's incorrect testimony

Two CT men did 30 years for murder on the basis of a forensics expert’s testimony that a towel of theirs had blood from the (horrifically bloody) crime scene. The towel hadn’t been tested, and it wasn’t even blood. Brutal rebuke from state Supreme Court. https://www.courant.com/news/connecticut/hc-news-new-milford-murder-supreme-court-reversal-20190614-shsnedup3bhldmn5hg3a35ettu-story.html

On the other side, shouldn't it have been the job of the defense to test such a crucial piece of evidence with an own additional expert as well? Even if access to such an expert is probably a financial matter, surely the defense failed them as well.

A criminologist’s testimony about a red-stained towel helped win murder convictions. But it wasn’t blood.
