the story I heard was that DuPont Chemicals began serious lobbying efforts against cannabis after they developed polyester. Also the cotton industry lobbies hard against marijuana (preemptively stamping out the competition)

The logging industry also lobbies against cannabis, since it makes better paper with much less environmental damage than wood pulp.
