https://abc7ny.com/louis-gossett-jr-roots-dies-oscar/14588484/LOS ANGELES, California -- Louis Gossett Jr., the first Black man to win a supporting actor Oscar and an Emmy winner for his role in the seminal TV miniseries "Roots," has died. He was 87.
Gossett's nephew told The Associated Press that the actor died Thursday night in Santa Monica, California. No cause of death was revealed.
Gossett always thought of his early career as a reverse Cinderella story, with success finding him from an early age and propelling him forward, toward his Academy Award for "An Officer and a Gentleman."
Gossett attended New York University on a basketball and drama scholarship. He was soon acting and singing on TV shows hosted by David Susskind, Ed Sullivan, Red Buttons, Merv Griffin, Jack Paar and Steve Allen.

(8,968 posts)Iron Eagle was a Trader Joe's Top Gun but fun. Enemy Mine was odd but entertaining.
Jaws 3 was one sequel too many.

(18,515 posts)Enemy Mine is a pretty underrated sci-fi flick. He and Dennis Quaid were an excellent pairing.

(3,871 posts)Or Galactica 1980 to be accurate.
There was an episode, "The Return of Starbuck" where one of the human pilots (Starbuck) crashes on a planet alongside a Cylon. They go from trying to kill each other to working together to survive. Even has the plot points of the child and the Cylon dying after being injured saving the human after they became friends.

(8,968 posts)I watched the Battlestar Galactica reboot which was really good, but never really watched the original.

(3,871 posts)Probably some story from WWII or earlier where something like that happened.
The Battlestar Galactica reboot was great. The original series had some great ideas and concepts - but it was a fairly campy production. But definitely a worthwhile show. The second show (second season?), Galactica 1980 was pretty terrible. The enemy mine type episode was the only memorable one for me.
(Well - memorable for being good that is. I remember one episode with Cylons running around in New York City that had Wolfman Jack in it - but cant say it was very good)
