Can someone help identify this book? I read a British mystery. The protagonist was named

something starting with D, Desmond, I think. There was a homeless man called Billy Blake who died in the book. There was a woman named Amanda who was suspected of murdering her first husband. And a saucy and streetwise 14 year old named Terry.

Plus, it was written 22 years ago! And, it sounds like a good tale...A shattering new novel as tangled and complex as the hearts and minds that spun it...
