https://parade.com/1285756/michael-giltz/best-mystery-books/amp/To craft a list of the 101 best mysteries of all time, the first thing you must do is define mystery, a genre we believe puts its emphasis on solving a puzzling eventoften a crime or murder but not always. If its set in London and theres fog and a man named Sherlock, youre on solid ground. Otherwise, the line between the best mystery book and the best thriller, suspense or spy novel is a murky one indeed.
In this batch, were favoring both ongoing series and stand-alone stories, where the puzzle of a crime drives the plot more than a race against time. Youll find classic locked-room mysteries, amateur detectives, cops on the beat and a few curve balls to keep you on your toes. Oh, and were sticking to one title per author, so you wont find five Agatha Christies or Ruth Rendells herejust one legendary book that stands in for their body of work.
Much more at link.
Enjoy!

(47,542 posts)7. I've been exploring cozy mysteries lately.
Ive found a few series I enjoy, but I do wonder why it always has to be a murder. Why cant it sometimes be a search for a valuable heirloom? Or someone got swindled? When the series goes on for many books, you have to question how idyllic that village really is with people getting murdered all the time.

Always murder...
But the coziesare light reads & not graphic.
Many are quite funny as well.
I think it takes too much brain power to writea white collar crime mystery.
