In THE WATCHERS, was the dog Einstein a German shepherd?

In the book, I mean. Don’t know if that was made into a movie.

PS - It was made into a movie that was unbelievably terrible. Most of the main characters were missing, and some teenager and his love interest were the main theme of the movie. Why they buy the rights to a book and then make one that has almost nothing to do with it, doesn't make sense to me.
