Books where whatever the protagonist was worried about turned out to be nothing at all. SPOILER

Arggh! I heard this once referred to as a "banging shutter" story (scary sounds in a haunted house turn out to be no more than a banging shutter). Anyone knows of another term for it, please post.

I finished a book recently that turned out like that. It was by one of my favorite authors, too.
However, the book was published when she was just starting out, and she has improved remarkably.

The book was VANITY DIES HARD, by Ruth Rendell. Published 1966. She's written some good stuff since, but this book sucks.

I haven't read her in a while but have watched a few of the dramatizations on Netflix. They are pretty good.
